FCHUM Ministries News - Volume 10 Issue 3 -Summer 2008

The Summer 2008 Edition updates you on the following activites with FCHUM:

Fern Creek Highview United Ministries marks two decades of service in uniting churches and community to care for our neighbors! 2008 - what a year of accomplishments! By the end of April, FCHUM had moved all programs into the new facility at 9300 Beulah Church Road. On May 28th we "officially" cut the ribbon welcoming all the community to visit our new location. On June 14th we gathered at Fern Creek United Methodist where it all began 20 years ago to celebrate our 20th anniversary! In 1988, ten churches began the work, now 20 years later 20 churches carry forth this vital work. In May of this year I was honored to observe my 12th anniversary with FCHUM squeezed in between our move and the GALA. PrayerFrom Rev. Ron Loughry ... Pastor Ken Hockenberry of Beulah Presbyterian Church reminds us and all of his colleagues, using the words of the Psalmist, "Fret Not…." The phrase "fret not" appears several times in the Psalms and in Proverbs, variations appear throughout the scriptures.

Since childhood I have been a nail-biter; nail-biting gets associated with worry. I really don't think I had a lot to worry about as a child, but perhaps I did. I was called to positions of leadership even in childhood, I preached my first sermon when I was 16.

Outwardly I don't seem like a big worrier, but perhaps inside I have been. Perhaps I do "fret." I have faith that God's grace is sufficient as I read from the 2nd letter to the Corinthians, but I worry if I am doing all I can and the best I can. Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries, Inc. (FCHUM) is a not-for-profit social service agency founded in 1988 by 10 local churches in the Louisville, Kentucky area. A group of representatives from 10 different churches met and made a commitment to move beyond their denominational ties to work together to meet the needs of our community.

20th AnniversaryFCHUM is currently supported by 20 churches representing 12 different denominations working together, making many significant contributions within the community on a daily basis.

FCHUM is a member of the Association of Community Ministries. The individual community ministires, who are members of the Association of Community Ministries, have made a positive difference to thousands of people's lives. As a result, the various communities around Metro Louisville provide a wonderful support system to the community.

FCHUM has around 100 volunteers who work in our programs. Our volunteers serve at all levels - from janitorial tasks to fund raising. FCHUM has been fortunate enough to receive help from various businesses and individuals in the community who want to make a difference in the lives of others. It takes the commitment of the churches, businesses, and other community organizations to help ensure that all residents of Fern Creek and Highview are able to enjoy a good quality of life. Please consider how you can be a part of contributing to our community through the FCHUM by volunteering!

Our mission is simply stated in the following italicized text: The purpose of Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries is to provide a ministry for residents of the Fern Creek and Highview areas of Metro Louisville and to improve the quality of life for residents in the community. Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries provides programs and activities which respond to the human needs of all residents in the community.
